Boeing showed its flying car of the future
Boeing has successfully tested its flying car of the future – it is an autonomous vehicle capable of both flying through the air and driving on roads – and even, possibly, over rough terrain. Boeing experts are very pleased with the successful first tests, as they managed to translate the concept into a working prototype in just one year, according to company CEO Greg Hislop. The first flight was carried out in Virginia. The flying vehicle itself was developed as part of the NeXt project to create a new type of flying vehicle for a rapidly growing urban environment.

The prototype is electric and designed to overcome distances up to 80.5 km – after that it will certainly need recharging. However, this is quite enough to move – or rather, the flight – between different areas of the city. As for the size of the transport, in length it is slightly more than 9 m, and 8.5 m in width. The head of Aurora Flight Sciences, John Longford, said that this is how all vehicles in the city will look like in the future, and they managed to achieve such a breakthrough thanks to autonomous control. Independence from the pilot will make such vehicles truly safe, clean and noiseless for flights around the city.
It is noteworthy that Boeing is not the only company that has thought about city flights on private unmanned vehicles. Similar developments are in Airbus, Intel and EHang. The first company from this list has already quite successfully tested its model. In addition, in March 2018, the company Kitty Hawk, with the support of Google founder Larry Page, showed its version of the drone called Cora. Uber is also considering the emergence of unmanned taxis for fast and safe movement around the city in the face of increasingly dense traffic on the roads.
The Russians also work in this direction, but their tests are not as successful as their American counterparts. Therefore, the prototype of the electric flying car of the future, proposed in Skolkovo by Bartini, fell into a snowdrift already in the first minute of the flight, and could not take off anymore. The test took place at Skolkovo, as part of the test of urban flights, which are designed to consider various options for the work of aerotaxis in the city and prepare the infrastructure for such transport.
The Russian aero car will be able to move at speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour, gain a kilometer in height and carry up to 4 passengers with things. They promise to release a workable model by 2020, and the prototype cost 12 million rubles. True, he still could not long hold out in the air.
In general, according to experts, the volume of the electric market by 2040 may amount to 3 trillion dollars.
